Description

The Magnolia grandiflora 'Galissonière' is a tree with large white flowers, fragrant and tulip-shaped, reaching a height of 10 to 15m (32.8 to 49.2 ft) at maturity.

Originally from North America, the 'Galissonière' Magnolia is a naturally rounded tree, hardy down to -15°C, with slow growth. The evergreen leaves are alternate, simple, and entire, glossy green on top and dull bronze underneath. The large tulip-shaped flowers, 15cm (5.9 in) in diameter, are delightfully scented and appear from June to September. Afterwards, it develops large, reddish cones that are quite decorative.

The Magnolia grandiflora 'Galissonière' prefers a rich, moist, even wet soil in summer, in a good forest soil (pH6). It appreciates light sun or partial shade, sheltered from prevailing winds. Beware of severe frost and hot, dry summers. Maintain good humidity by lightly misting the leaves in the evening. Pruning is unnecessary.

The Magnolia grandiflora 'Galissonière' can be placed as a solitary tree or in a free hedge, but is especially recommended in a strategic location to admire in the garden and enjoy its lemony fragrance.

Planting and care

Magnolia grandiflora 'Galissonière' should be planted in the spring in rich, moist, or even wet ground, in good forest soil (pH6). It prefers a site in light sun or partial shade, sheltered from prevailing winds. On planting be careful not to break the fleshy roots and not to bury the root ball too deeply. Mulch and water in the summer. Beware of heavy frosts and hot, dry summers. Maintain good humidity by showering its foliage with a fine spray only in the evening. Pruning is unnecessary.
