Among our ornamental willows, the dwarf willows hold a special place with their small development, typically between 60 cm and 1.50 m in height. These deciduous shrubs easily find a home in a rockery, on a slope, by a pond edge, or in a large container. We love their light silhouette, fine foliage, and pretty spring aments.
The most well-known is the Flamingo willow Salix integra ‘Hakuro Nishiki’, prized for its young shoots, which are pink, then white, and finally soft green. Salix x ‘Boydii’, Boyd's Willow, is slow-growing and forms a small, dense shrub with small, perfectly round, silvery-grey foliage. Salix repens, the creeping willow, with its spreading habit, is an excellent groundcover for damp slopes and rockeries. Salix purpurea ‘Nana’, a dwarf purple willow, forms a rounded, pliable mass, decorative for its red stems and bluish foliage.
Dwarf willows love sun and a soil that remains cool year-round, or even moist, depending on the variety. Plant them in autumn or late winter in well-loosened soil, water regularly initially, then prune lightly in late winter to maintain a dense habit.
