Cryptanthus or earth stars plants, known for their architectural leaves and shimmering hues, are captivating. The emblematic striped cryptanthe, Cryptanthus bivittatus, native to Brazil, stands out with its rosette of striped leaves in pink and green shades.
Originating from the tropical forests of South America, especially Brazil, these compact plants from the Bromeliaceae family come in a multitude of varieties. The Red Star Cryptanthus flaunts a spectacular deep red, while the Black Mystic Cryptanthus displays foliage that is almost black, perfect for a contemporary look. If you prefer softer tones, the Zonate Cryptanthus offers cream and dark green stripes reminiscent of a zebra.
Cryptanthes generally measure between 10 and 20 cm and thrive in indirect light, but they also tolerate slightly shaded areas. A light, well-draining substrate, moderate watering, and constant humidity recreate their natural habitat. These plants feel comfortable between 18 and 25 °C and require minimal maintenance: simply remove any withered or dried leaves.
