Abeliophyllum is a deciduous bush that flowers in the garden from the early days of spring. The species type, called white Forsythia, is known for its white flowers. It has produced some varieties including Abeliophyllum distichum 'Roseum' whose delicate flowers display a pastel pink. The less well known Abeliophyllum distichum 'White Forsythia' forms cascades of white flowers, purity and elegance personified. Abeliophyllum is a bush native to Korea that generally reaches between 1 and 2 m in all directions. This bush often flowers as early as February or March, depending on the climate, even before the leaves appear. To ensure successful cultivation of Abeliophyllum, plant it in full sun or partial shade in ordinary, well-drained soil, even dry in summer. Annual pruning after flowering will promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering the following year.
