Brachychiton, also known as "bottle trees", "Kurrajong" or "Australian flame trees", are spectacular plants native to Australia and neighbouring tropical regions. Brachychiton discolor, with its large bright pink bell-shaped flowers and velvety dark green leaves, is one of the most impressive to brighten gardens in the heart of summer.

These trees and bushes belong to the Malvaceae family. Their leaves are evergreen or deciduous depending on the species and come in a variety of shapes: palmate, lobed, or entire. Brachychiton acerifolius has maple-like leaves and bright red flowering in summer. With less obvious flowering, Brachychiton populneus is appreciated for its dense foliage reminiscent of certain poplars and its drought resistance. Also worth mentioning is Brachychiton rupestris, whose swollen trunk stores water, making it a perfect variety for dry climates.

Brachychiton plants thrive in well-drained soils and sunny exposures. Hardy down to -5/-6°C depending on the species, they are perfect for gardens in Mediterranean coastal areas, but also thrive in a large, bright veranda or on the terrace during the warmer seasons.
