Our range of Melaleuca, bushes native to Australia prized for their small evergreen, often aromatic foliage. Their flowering in fluffy pompoms or spikes is unique and charming. The most famous is the Melaleuca alternifolia, also called tea tree, whose leaves provide an essential oil renowned for its antiseptic properties. It features fine foliage and discreet white flowering. The more bushy Melaleuca gibbosa bears finely textured foliage. Its long flowering in the form of mauve pompoms adds a colourful and delicate touch to flower beds or rock gardens in mild climates. Discover also the Melaleuca nesophila and its clusters of pompom flowers in a purplish pink in spring and summer. With its dense, evergreen foliage, it can serve as an excellent windbreak hedge plant by the sea. Very comfortable along the Channel coastline, the Melaleuca squamea or squamous Cajeput is an upright bush with small silvery foliage adorned with pretty little pink pompoms leaning towards mauve in spring.
From the myrtle family, melaleucas are cultivated like their close relatives, the Bottlebrushes. These bushes love well-drained, sandy, slightly acidic to neutral soil and a sunny exposure. They tolerate drought well once established, but are sensitive to heavy frosts. In cold climates, they are grown in pots to be brought indoors in winter.
