The Broad bean or Fava beanVicia faba – of the Leguminosae family is an annual leguminous plant grown for its generous beans enclosed in a well-filled pod. Hardy, the broad bean thrives in poor or clay soils and is very easy to grow. For example, the Aguadulce Broad bean, with a very long pod, can be sown in late winter in open ground and harvested in summer. It can be eaten raw, like radishes, when the bean is young, or cooked if picked later. The broad bean is rich in proteins, carbohydrates and fibres, making it an excellent energy food.
