Kale is a very hardy herbaceous plant grown in vegetable gardens for its leaves. Its very tall habit and its wavy leaves without a head allow it to sometimes parade in ornamental gardens, with a good example being Westland Semi-Dwarf Kale. A winter vegetable, it likes rich soils and sunlight and is harvested between September and December after sowing its seeds in spring. Kale is remarkably low in calories but rich in vitamins K, A and C and calcium.
