A selection of Berberis or barberry suitable for pot cultivation. These are small varieties like Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana' with purple foliage, 'Tiny Gold' dressed in gold, or Berberis thunbergii 'Lutin Rouge', with scarlet young shoots. These small 40 to 80 cm (16 to 32in) tall bushes provide a pleasant touch of colour to the terrace or balcony. In addition to their foliage, which displays a rich range of green, golden, pink ('Rosy Glow'), orange ('Orange Ice'), red, or purple hues, they offer pretty flowers ranging from orange to yellow, and decorative berries. One of the most beautiful, with its abundant spring flowering of bright orange and its small evergreen foliage, is Berberis darwinii 'Compacta'. To replace boxwood in a beautiful planter, also discover the boxwood-leaved barberry Berberis buxifolia 'Nana', which is only sparsely thorny, evergreen in winter, with a dense cushion-like shape, flowering in orange-yellow and producing a few small purple-violet fruits. Low-maintenance and very hardy, dwarf barberries are robust plants that are easily grown in pots. Light pruning after flowering is sufficient to maintain a nice habit.
