An endemic genus of New Zealand, Chionochloa are beautiful evergreen grasses with stunning feathery inflorescences. Native to mountainous regions, they require a porous and rocky, well-drained soil, free from limestone and kept moist. They are only reliably hardy in these conditions in a maritime climate; elsewhere, their hardiness will be more variable.
