Description

Chionochloa rubra is a superb evergreen species forming a very large hemispherical cushion, which is soft to the touch and also very pleasing to the eye. It consists of slender, almost cylindrical bronze-green leaves with silver tints when the wind blows, taking on coppery tones in winter. The flowering, like that of Carex buchananii, has no ornamental interest. Native to volcanic montane regions, Chionochloa rubra prefers well-drained, porous, and rocky soils with no limestone, in full sun. It dislikes confinement and moisture. It is only truly hardy in these dry and warm conditions, but once the right spot is found, it is truly magnificent.
