Standard fruit trees are suitable for large gardens and open orchards. Their tall trunk, measuring between 1.80 m and 2 m, carries the branches well above the ground: you can walk underneath more easily, mow around the base, and the tree quickly becomes a fine specimen in the orchard. This standard form is ideal for gardeners with ample space and a suitable budget.
Standard apple trees are a perfect example. 'Reinette Étoilée' produces red, decorative, and fragrant apples, typical of the heritage varieties we love to grow in the garden. As for pear trees, 'Triomphe de Vienne' is a very robust heritage variety offering excellent, tasty fruit. Before choosing, consider the available space, the harvest period, and selecting another tree to encourage pollination.
If you wish to plant in autumn or winter, bare-root fruit trees are more economical. To help you care for these large specimens over the years, consult our guides on "Care and pruning of standard fruit trees".
