The true lavenders, Lavandula angustifolia, are evergreen, fragrant and nectar-rich undershrubs, suited to dry gardens, poor and well-drained soils, in full sun. With more delicate foliage and fragrance than lavandins, they can be used in low borders, rock gardens, at the foot of roses, in Mediterranean borders, or in pots on a patio. Their summer flowers attract bees and are used in dried flower arrangements and scented sachets.

To edge a path, ‘Munstead’ is a safe bet : this variety forms a regular mound, aromatic, with blue-violet spikes. 'Hidcote’, with a deeper violet colour, is often planted in gardens. 'Alba’ offers a luminous white flowering, while ‘Rosea’ displays a rather rare soft pink colour. 'Montagnac White’, with a very compact habit and early white flowering, is particularly interesting in rock gardens, on balconies, or in a narrow border.
