Inulas are perennials that belong to the Asteraceae family, they are characterized by inflorescences in yellow to orange heads. Widely distributed in all temperate zones of the world, the most spectacular species come from the Himalayas, including the large Inula magnifica with lush foliage, reaching a height of 1.80m (6ft) when in bloom. Other species are more common in Europe, such as the Inula helenium, also known as the great Elecampane. The growing conditions vary from one species to another, while all inulas like sunny to semi-shaded locations and cool, light soils, the small alpine varieties will thrive in the sun, in any well-drained soil.
