The Brassicas or Ornamental Cabbages are annual plants liked for their magnificent colours and astonishing shapes in winter. Ornamental cabbages do not form heads. They have highly decorative foliage that are curly, more or less cut, which takes on shades of red, yellow, purple, white, and green at the first chills of winter. The more frosts there are, the more vibrant they become! There are also stem varieties (ideal for bouquets) or palm trees. These plants like rich, fresh but well-drained soils in sunny locations. Avoid waterlogged soil in the winter. Plant them in August, spaced 50cm (20in) apart in your flower beds. They are easy to maintain, Brassicas are well-suited for container gardening. Pots, planters, or containers, these plants will brighten up terraces and balconies in all regions.
