Cold and drought-resistant hedge shrubs are well suited to harsh winters and dry summers. They can be used to create informal or clipped hedges that define the garden, provide privacy, and shelter small wildlife. After the first few years of cultivation, they cope very well with a lack of water.

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) form dense, countryside-style hedges that flower in spring and are appreciated by birds. Cotoneaster lacteus keeps its foliage in winter and quickly forms a bushy screen. Evergreen Pyracanthas also play a defensive role. Wild roses also have a rightful place in this selection: Rosa pimpinellifolia forms a thorny, almost impenetrable thicket in poor, dry, even chalky soils.

In a very exposed garden, you could plant a windbreak hedge made up of shrubs of varying heights. Read our article “5 cold and drought-resistant hedge shrubs”, and discover other species suited to these challenging conditions.
