Description

Cytisus scoparius 'Goldfinch', also known as Broom, is a deciduous and very vigourous shrub. At the end of spring, its young branches, swaying in the wind, become covered with red and yellow-orange pea flowers. Its flowers and upright stems will bring a visual effect and a sought-after sense of movement to your garden.

Cytisus scoparius 'Goldfinch' has a rounded habit composed of upright branches. As this shrub ages, its habit widens. At maturity, it will reach 1 m (3 ft 4 in) in height and 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) in spread. It has small trifoliate leaves of dark green colour scattered on its branches. At the end of spring, during the months of May and June, the shrub is adorned with a multitude of small papilionaceous flowers, yellow-orange on the inside and red on the outside.

The Broom 'Goldfinch' is not demanding and can grow in all types of soil. A sunny exposure is recommended for your shrub to offer you a beautiful flowering. The more sunny the exposure, the more abundant its flowering will be.

Cytisus scoparius 'Goldfinch' is a visual shrub thanks to its upright branches. It will delight you when planted with grasses or heathers.

Tips: After pruning your broom, use the cut branches to make good garden brooms, hence its name, "broom".

Planting and care

Cytisus scoparius 'Goldfinch' should be planted in spring or autumn in a sunny location and in any light and well-drained soil that is preferably slightly acidic. Limestone is tolerated. Choose its location carefully as it does not like to be moved. Not very demanding, it will be satisfied with severe pruning after flowering to avoid fruiting, which quickly exhausts the plant. This also helps to maintain a compact habit that does not become bare at the base. In the event of a severe winter, cut back the blackened stems to the base. Its lifespan is quite short at around 5 years.
