Our range of plantains (Plantago). Little known in the vegetable garden, plantains are hardy and easy to grow leaf vegetables. The most common is Plantago coronopus, also called buck's horn plantain, whose finely cut and tender leaves have a slightly sweet taste with hazelnut aromas. Harvested young, they integrate well into salads and mixed young shoot blends. Plantago major 'Atropurpurea' or great purple plantain is a more robust species with broad, ovate leaves, used both in cooking and herbal medicine. The lanceolate plantain Plantago lanceolata, on the other hand, stands out with its slender leaves and more pronounced flavour, sometimes used in herbal tea. Plantains are undemanding wild herbs; they tolerate drought well and can be harvested as needed. Staggered sowing allows for tender young leaves throughout much of the year.
