Blue-flowered poppies all belong to the Meconopsis genus; these Himalayan poppies with large, satiny flowers are blue to violet-blue depending on the species and variety. Their cultivation requirements differ from full-sun poppies: they require moist, humus-bearing, well-drained soil and a bright exposure without scorching sun. Plant them in partial shade where their blue corollas pair beautifully with ferns, hostas, primroses and hellebores.
Meconopsis betonicifolia, or the Himalayan blue poppy, is the most well-known. It bears large azure blue flowers, often highlighted by a yellow-orange centre. Meconopsis grandis offers a deeper blue, sometimes tinged with purple at the base of the petals, and a remarkable presence in shady gardens. These plants are best planted young, without disturbing their roots too much, then watered regularly during dry spells. Much less well-known, Meconopsis horridula is a small blue poppy from Himalayan alpine rock gardens.
