Description

A mythical genus of plant if ever there was one, especially for its Himalayan species: these "Diamonds from the Roof of the World" on which the dreams of many enthusiasts are shattered. The word 'shatter' is not too strong because successfully growing species such as M. bella, M. delavayi or M. punicea is more akin to the alchemist's initiation than to gardening. The species we offer are among the easiest to grow.

This blue poppy is the most perennial of all. Some plants have been faithfully returning to the garden for over a decade. In less arid regions, 4 to 5 years is a more realistic life expectancy. The foliage is identical to that of M. betonicifolia, but the magnificent bright gentian-blue flowers, often shaded purple at the base, are like large open cups, resembling the Iceland poppy in shape, but much larger.

Planting and care

In order to grow this plant successfully, it needs a cool and humid environment. The soil should always be moist but also well-drained. It's worth noting that this plant comes from mountainous areas where the soil is drained by the underlying rock. Therefore, a mixture of equal parts clay soil, leaf compost, and gravel works well. It cannot tolerate limestone or heat, making it difficult to cultivate except in temperate coastal areas or medium mountain regions that are cool enough in summer due to altitude and covered with a thick layer of snow in winter.
