While the poppies shoot up like weeds in my garden, this variety didn't produce anything. What a shame. But I have to say that the seeds from Thompson and Morgan are disappointing in practice. From now on, I source directly from Sarah Raven or Kings seeds. Large packets and top-quality seeds.

Description

The 'Butter Bush' California Poppy, known by its Latin name Eschscholzia californica, is a hardy annual plant that is very easy to grow and has abundant yellow, single or semi-double flowers from June to September.

It gets its common names from the resemblance of its flowers to those of its cousins, Poppies and Corn Poppies, as well as its origin in the American West. This variety of California Poppy bears graceful "paper flowers" in the color of fresh butter. Its melliferous flowers will attract bees and hoverflies to your garden, an undeniable ecological asset.

It tolerates all types of soil, even dry and poor ones, but prefers light soils over heavy ones.

Due to its small size (25 cm (9.8 in) tall and wide), the California Poppy is generally used at the front of flower beds, in rockeries, or in pots on the terrace. It easily self-seeds and forms beautiful, naturally-looking flower beds year after year. Full sun exposure will promote its flowering.

Picking its flowers will allow you to create beautiful short-lived bouquets.

Planting and care

Sow California poppy from March to May, directly in place in rows spaced 15cm (5.9 in) apart. Cover the seeds with 1cm (0.4 in) of fine soil and water regularly. The seeds will germinate between 5 to 10 days. When the young plants are strong enough, you can thin out your sowing by transplanting a few plants 15cm (5.9 in) apart from each other. Repeat your sowings every 15 days from March to May to ensure regular and abundant flowering from June to September. By sowing under cover in February at 15-20°C, you can obtain young plants ready to be transplanted after the frost and have the first flowering as early as May.
