Hydrangeas by flower colour

Hydrangeas come in a relatively limited range of colours, but this doesn't prevent them from covering a wide diversity of shapes, shades, and periods of interest: in the classic Hydrangea macrophylla, as well as H. serrata, the flowers range from pink to blue, with various shades of mauve, red, purple, or white in some less common varieties like 'Madame Emile Mouillère'. In others, the colour subtly changes over the weeks (H. Magical 'Revolution'). However, for the majority of varieties, it's the soil pH that determines the colour: the blue ones will only stay blue in acidic soil or with the addition of Aluminium sulfate, and they will inevitably turn pink or red in neutral or alkaline soil!
For H. paniculata and quercifolia, white is the norm, but it often gradually turns pink (H. quercifolia 'Ruby Slippers') or green (H. paniculata 'Limelight') when fading.
H. arborescens are white, although there are now sublime pink-purple varieties like Invincibelle.
H. aspera and other related species have a mauve-toned centre and paler peripheral flowers, regardless of the soil.
