Hydrangeas with pink or blue flowers are common but there are also several varieties that are closer to red. The shades range from a lovely raspberry red to a deep purple red. Thre are, for example, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Leuchtfeuer', with light green then pinkish-red balls, H. 'Rotschwanz', with flat inflorescences of an elegant dark red, or H. 'Magical Ruby Tuesday', marbled garnet red with purple, which is very striking. Most of them will display superb violet hues if planted in acidic soil, which allows for bluish tones. Hydrangea arborescens 'Ruby Annabelle', on the other hand, is a relatively recent beautiful creation that stands out from the classic white Annabelle.
All of these varieties have tones with a hint of pink and are therefore very easy to combine with pink or bluer varieties. Make your choice!
