Description
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Merveille Sanguine' is an old hydrangea variety prized for its truly spectacular colours. Its flowerheads range from red-pink to raspberry red in neutral soil, or even purplish violet in acidic soil. They stand out against dark foliage, tinged with bronze and purple from summer onwards, which turns burgundy red in autumn. This French variety, bred by Henri Cayeux in the 1930s, remains one of the most interesting red hydrangeas for slightly shady areas of the garden.
Hydrangea macrophylla belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. The botanical species originates from Japan, but 'Merveille Sanguine' is a horticultural selection also sold under the names 'Brunette', 'Colour Fantasy' and 'Folis Purpureus'. This deciduous shrub forms a dense, rounded bush measuring 1.20 to 1.50 m in height and spread. Its growth is fairly slow during the first few years, then becomes regular. Its large, oval, thick, toothed leaves unfurl in bronze-green shades. They darken over the summer and turn purple, especially if the plant receives sufficient light. As autumn approaches, they take on dark red to burgundy shades before falling. Flowering takes place from July to September, sometimes lasting until October in a mild climate. The flowerheads, 15 to 20 cm across, are composed mainly of decorative sterile florets. Their colour depends on the nature of the soil. It remains red-pink to raspberry red in neutral or slightly acidic soil and becomes darker, turning purple to blackcurrant violet, in acidic soil containing assimilable aluminium. The cut flowers last well in a vase and can also be dried. This variety is rated as hardy to -15 °C, and it tolerates coastal conditions when sheltered from strong winds.
This 'Merveille Sanguine' hydrangea can be planted in a shrub border, a not-too-tall flowering hedge or grown in a large container on a slightly shady terrace. Thanks to its autumn foliage, this shrub remains decorative until the beginning of winter. In a romantic or Japanese-inspired garden, it can be paired with white flowers and silvery foliage. Hydrangea serrata 'White on White', Camellia japonica 'Nobilissima', Fuchsia magellanica 'Hawkshead' and the fern Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum' provide different flowers and foliage that highlight the rounded, colourful mass of this hydrangea.

Hydrangea 'Merveille Sanguine' should be planted in deep, fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, preferably neutral to acidic. It does not need pure ericaceous compost: an addition of compost or leaf mould is sufficient in deep, well-loosened soil. It does not thrive in chalky soil. A bright position, in gentle sun or partial shade, enhances the purple hues of the foliage. In an oceanic climate, it tolerates more sun provided the soil remains moist. It prefers a position sheltered from cold winds and late frosts. Regular watering and mulching are useful during dry periods. Growing in a pot is possible in a container with drainage holes, measuring at least 50 cm in diameter.
