Our range of clary sages (Salvia sclarea). The botanical type Salvia sclarea is known for its beautiful summer flowering in shades of pale pink to pastel blue. Nicknamed musky sage or all-good, it is a large, aromatic biennial (or short-lived perennial) with an architectural habit, ideal for sunny borders, dry gardens and naturalistic schemes.
The selection ‘Vatican White’, with more luminous, white, pearly bracts, is interesting in a white garden among grey foliage. Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica is distinguished by its bicoloured flowers of pale blue and cream, enhanced by pearly pink bracts, and its excellent drought resistance.
These sages require sun, loose, well-drained, even calcareous soil, and don't like excess moisture in winter; plant them in soil lightened with gravel and only water until established. Remove spent flower spikes in summer to limit self-seeding and prolong the life of the clumps.
