Our range of Pin Oaks. Valued for its slender habit and flamboyant autumn foliage, the Quercus palustris, also known as Pin Oak, is a deciduous oak suited to large gardens and avenues. It has produced several cultivars selected for their narrow habit ('Green Pillar'), compact size ('Green Dwarf'), or particularly decorative foliage in the case of 'Betty Jean'.
The Pin Oak is native to eastern North America, where it grows naturally in floodplains. It is a fast-growing tree with a pyramidal habit, varying in size depending on the cultivar: from 3 to 6 meters in height for compact forms, up to 20-25 meters for the standard species. It is recognizable by its deeply lobed leaves, divided into 5 to 7 lobes, somewhat resembling those of maples. An excellent ornamental tree, it produces discreet flowering in spring followed by small spherical acorns, favored by birds and squirrels.
Plant your Pin Oak in acidic to neutral, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun. It dislikes limestone and heavy, sticky clay soils. Water it regularly during the first few years. Light pruning in late winter is sufficient to shape young plants.
