Berberis or Barberries are brilliant thorny bushes that form good defensive and highly decorative hedges. With a bushy habit, they bear alternate, simple leaves grouped in small clusters and abundant yellow or orange flowers followed by pink, red or blue-black berries. Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea develops bright red-purple leaves, while Berberis Thunbergii Bagatelle has dark red leaves, almost black. These bushes tolerate all types of moist, well-drained soil in sunny locations. Pruning consists of cutting back the faded branches after flowering at the level of the young shoots to maintain a rounded shape. Barberries are used as standalone plants, defensive hedges, borders, or in groups of bushes accompanied by Forsythias or Abelias.
