The Portulacaria, also known as Elephant Bush, is a hardy and easy-going succulent plant, sometimes confused with the Jade tree (Crassula ovata); it is the perfect plant for a trendy and low-maintenance interior.
The must-have Portulacaria afra 'Variegata' features small, ovate, variegated cream leaves and displays a trailing habit ideal for hanging baskets. The Portulacaria afra ‘Prostrata’, with its creeping growth, is perfect for hanging arrangements or plant displays. For a more classical look, opt for the Portulacaria afra classic with its thick stems and natural bonsai appearance.
Native to Southern Africa, Portulacaria belongs to the Didiereaceae family. These succulent plants thrive in bright light, even direct sunlight. Well-draining soil is essential to prevent excess water. Water moderately in summer and reduce in winter. These undemanding plants can tolerate fairly cool temperatures (down to 2 or 3 °C).
