Our range of hardy eucalyptus includes gum trees capable of withstanding -12 to -15 °C, sometimes more, in very well-drained soil. The Eucalyptus gunnii ‘Azura’ is therefore often planted away from the coast: hardy down to -12°C, with a columnar habit and grey-blue foliage, it is interesting as a specimen or for forming a hedge.

Also discover Eucalyptus parvula (parvifolia) with moderate growth, reddish young wood, which bark peels in multicoloured ribbons. It shows good resistance to damp cold.
Also montane, the Eucalyptus pauciflora ‘Buffalo’ forms a small tree with broad leaves that tolerates -15 °C and beyond if the ground is not waterlogged in winter. The Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. niphophila ‘Mt Bogong’, perhaps the most cold-resistant, charms with its very ornamental bark in light tones. Eucalyptus neglecta, smaller, clad in large juvenile grey-blue leaves, tolerant of limestone, is suitable for small gardens.

These eucalyptus are planted in full sun, in well-drained soil. Clay soils that are wet in winter or very dry in summer are the main points of caution. Plant these trees preferably in spring, water them regularly in the first year, mulch and protect the young plant in winter.
