Our range of pistachios (Pistacia) and false pistachios (Staphylea). Unlike the 'true' pistachios grown for their fruit, those presented here are ornamental bushes. These evergreen or deciduous shrubs or small trees are characterised by their divided foliage, their airy silhouette and, for some species, edible fruiting or spectacular autumn colours.
The mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus) forms dense, evergreen hedges by the sea and tolerates drought perfectly. The Chinese pistachio (Pistacia chinensis) is covered in autumn with bright colours ranging from yellow to scarlet. The deciduous, fragrant terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus) is a familiar sight on limestone hills throughout the South of France.
Staphylea are especially appreciated for their spring flowering in pendulous clusters of fragrant white bells. Staphylea colchica, for example, is a deciduous shrub with rapid growth, also offering curious decorative capsules in summer, whose kernel can be consumed.
Pistachios prefer warm and sunny exposures, in a well-drained soil, even calcareous and dry, while staphylae tolerate partial shade and a moist, humus-bearing and well-drained soil better. Plant in spring or autumn and water regularly during the first year to promote rooting.
