Red-flowered poppies are a diverse group of plants that share red corollas with a natural-looking appearance. Oriental poppies are perennials for full sun, to be planted in borders. Annual poppies are direct-sown in a flower bed, a wildflower meadow, or a slightly wild area of the garden. They all appreciate light and well-prepared soil. They fit in equally well in natural gardens and in more formal settings.
In a perennial border, Papaver orientale ‘Heartbeat’ displays an intense red around a dark centre, clearly visible at the beginning of summer. 'Beauty of Livermere’ offers a darker, almost purplish red colour, superb with grey foliage, grasses or irises. For a more rustic scene, choose the red corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas, which self-seeds readily. Papaver somniferum ‘Seriously Scarlet’ with very double, scarlet red flowers, is more theatrical.
Plant Oriental poppies in perennial borders, in full sun, in well-drained soil. As their foliage often disappears after flowering, they benefit from being combined with hardy geraniums or catmints. The corn poppy seeds can be sown directly in place, in a wildflower meadow, at the edge of the vegetable garden, or in a country-style border.
