The compact bush produces beautiful round flower heads that are 14 cm (5.5 in) in diameter. At first, the flowers are deep pink, almost red, with rose-white at the centre. As they mature, the colour changes to white bordered with bright pink, with very pronounced autumn colours. Overall, the flowers are magnificent!

Description

The Hydrangea or Hydrangea macrophylla Salsa is an amazing novelty with large bicolor red and white inflorescences from the Dutch Ladies hydrangea series, offering short and floribundus plants. On a compact bush, superb balls of flowers bloom in summer, first deep pink almost red marked with pink-white at the heart, then white bordered with bright pink, a very changing colour, marked with very pink reflections, sublimated by autumn leaves becoming purple. The plant performs very well in the garden, in large pots and gives beautiful cut flowers for the house.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Salsa' is a plant that comes from crossing two species: H. macrophylla and H. aspera, among others. They are both hardy plants from the Hydrangeae family, initially from China and Japan. 'Salsa' is part of a group of plants chosen for their compact, dense habit and abundant flowers, which are 14-15 cm (5.5-5.9 in) in size. This shrub has a neat, rounded shape and grows up to 1 metre (3 ft 4 in) in all directions. Its flowers bloom from July to September to October and are a beautiful pink-red shade with a white-pink centre. The flowers grow on dark green-purple, glossy, waffled, deciduous leaves. The leaves are wide, opposite, and have a rough, saw-like edge. In this variety, the juvenile foliage is a bronze-purple colour. Hydrangeas can live for at least 50 years.

The Hydrangea 'Salsa' is a beautiful plant that produces colourful blooms from spring to autumn. It can be planted in gardens, terraces or indoors and is adaptable to different exposures, whether in full sun or partial shade. This plant is ideal for container gardening and can be displayed near the entrance of your home in a beautiful pot.

Although the Hydrangea 'Salsa' doesn't tolerate limestone well, it is not considered an ericaceous plant. To complement its round shape, combine it with magellanica fuchsias or annual impatiens, or plant it in front of spring-flowering bulbs. Enjoy its beautiful and long-lasting blooms in the garden or indoors.

Planting and care

If you want to grow Hydrangea macrophylla Salsa, plant it in a slightly shaded spot during spring or early autumn, such as against an east-facing wall or to the north. If you live in a very cold region, it's better to overwinter it in a cold greenhouse or veranda, even though it can survive temperatures as low as -15°C. Cold and drying winds can hurt the plant, so protecting it from them is essential.

The plant doesn't need acidic soil, but it prefers deep, fresh and well-drained soil with moderate fertility. Before planting, you can enrich the soil with a good base fertiliser. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) from the base and include plenty of well-rotted compost to retain the soil's freshness.

Hydrangea macrophylla Salsa is very hardy and can be grown in cold regions without fear of damage. To prune the plant, remove the faded flowers on the first bud or on the pair of buds directly below. When the plant is mature, cut back a quarter or a third of the oldest stems to encourage the formation of young shoots. This pruning should be done every year during March and April.
