Hydrangea arborescens Annabelle

The Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' is a bushy shrub with particularly spectacular flowers. From the month of June, small inflorescences emerge in light green. They will bloom throughout the summer, gradually swelling to the size of a large balloon. They then brighten up and display a bright white that stands out clearly from the background of green foliage. Often more adaptable than its cousins, it likes moist and humus-rich soils and sun, but will also tolerate poorer soil and a semi-shaded exposure.

What a spectacle! This Hydrangea has beautiful branched stems that reach up to 1.5m (4 to 11ft) and form a bush of the same width (and more depending on conditions). They are crowned with large perfectly spherical flower heads that give it a very airy silhouette. The weight of these inflorescences often bends the flexible stems and they then seem to float in the wind. It is true that they can measure up to 30cm (11.8in) in diameter and are made up of a multitude of small flowers with 3 to 4 petals, of a bright white which is slightly washed with green at the beginning of flowering. The whole contrasting elegantly with the green foliage, composed of beautiful single, wide and ovate deciduous leaves which are nicely crimped. 'Annabelle' is suitable for all situations: if you like the natural look, it will satisfy you with its simplicity. If your compositions are more contemporary, it will bring an architectural touch with its hanging balls. Finally, if you prefer to combine white and green, it will be essential. In addition, its flowers will dry on the stem, providing autumn and winter decoration in shades of fawn.

The Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' brightens up all scenes in partial shade and the effect is enhanced when placed in a group. At its feet, a small border of boxwood or Lonicera nitida Elegant will allow it to rest its large flowers and display them. In front of a city garden, it brings refinement and distinction surrounded by Hellebores, Daffodils and Pansies that extend the flowering season and complement the range of whites.
