Arrived broken, I was worried but I replanted the broken branch on a whim, and it has taken root... I think it will be beautiful next year. Planted in a large pot and partly in the sun, the single bloom this year is large.

Description

Hydrangea paniculata Sundae Fraise, also known as the bush hydrangea or paniculate hydrangea, is a close relative of the 'Vanilla Strawberry' variety, with the difference being its brighter pink flowers and more compact habit, making it suitable for containers and small gardens.

A bush with an upright habit, reaching just over 1.50m (4ft 11in) in height, the Sundae Fraise hydrangea bears compact panicle inflorescences that are 20-25cm (7.9 - 9.8in) long. Initially pure white, the flowers quickly turn pale pink and then carmine pink towards the end of the flowering period. The long-lasting opening of the inflorescences results in a bush that offers a beautiful gradient of color, with some branches being vivid pink while others remain white. The deciduous foliage falls in autumn.

However, this hydrangea requires a fairly sunny location to develop its beautiful colour. The inflorescences are accompanied by dark green deciduous foliage that slightly turns orange in autumn.

This is a very hardy variety that can be placed in containers, as a standalone plant, or in flower beds. You can pair it with grasses: Miscanthus, Panicum virgatum 'Squaw', and Stipa.

Planting and care

Hydrangea paniculata Sundae Fraise requires a sunny location to achieve autumn colors and a humus-rich, neutral to acidic soil. At planting, install it in deeply worked soil. A good base fertilizer (horn or dehydrated blood) will promote the growth of your plant and nourish it without the risk of burning. If your soil tends to be dry, mix our water retainer, stockosorb, with the soil when filling the planting hole and provide a watering basin on the surface.

In late summer, we advise you not to cut the dry panicles, as they will protect the terminal shoots of the branches in winter. You should cut all the dry flowers at the end of February or at the first signs of spring. Their spring growth is quite late. Hydrangea paniculata: These shrubby hydrangeas with elongated inflorescences are drought-resistant and easily establish even in non-acidic soil. They bloom generously from June until the first frost. When planted in the sun, their inflorescences colour in autumn.
