Description

This is a collection of 10 varieties of shrubs that are easy to grow and maintain, and tolerate repeated pruning well. They are delivered as a kit of 10 plants (2 plants of each species or variety). They are perfect for creating a windbreak or privacy screen in your garden within a few years. Their fragrant flowering attracts pollinators, and their fruiting is both decorative and appreciated by birds. This collection of evergreen bushes allows you to create approximately 10 metres (33 feet) of hedging at a lower cost.

The collection consists of:

- 2 Cotoneaster lacteus - Milky Cotoneaster: approximately 3 metres (10 feet) in all directions if not pruned. Its habit is flexible and natural, its spring flowering is white and fragrant, giving way to clusters of bright red fruits that persist until winter. Suitable for all soils and exposures.

- 2 Cupressocyparis leylandii (Leyland Cypress): A large, dense, and fast-growing conifer that creates an effective screen against wind and prying eyes in a few years. Undemanding in terms of soil, it adapts to most climates.

- 2 Photinia Red Robin: on average, 3 metres (10 feet) in height and 2 metres (7 feet) in spread without pruning, it stands out with its red young shoots and leaves, contrasting with its mature foliage that is dark green and shiny. Spring flowering (from March to May depending on the region) in clusters of small, white flowers, fragrant and honey-producing.

- 2 Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia - Cherry Laurel: approximately 4 metres (13 feet) in height and 3 metres (10 feet) in spread, if not hindered in its lateral development. Its habit is both erect and bushy, well-branched at the base, and its leaves are more rounded than the species, with a light to medium green colour and glossy appearance. Spring flowering in upright clusters covered with tiny white flowers, followed by small ovoid fruits that are initially green, then turn red, and finally black when ripe, but not edible.

- 2 Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia - Portuguese Laurel: a slow-growing variety with narrow leaves. A large bush, approximately 4 to 5 metres (13 to 16 feet) in height if not pruned, with a naturally conical habit, very elegant. Flowering in May-June, with cascading clusters of pure white, fluffy flowers. Small berries that are initially green, then turn red, and finally dark purple and black.

Plant these shrubs preferably in autumn or early spring, in full sun or partial shade, mixing them and spacing them 80 cm (32in) to 1 metre (3 feet) apart. They will thrive in any well-prepared garden soil enriched with leaf compost.

Tip: Do not prune at the beginning of the season to fully enjoy the flowering! If possible, avoid pruning at the end of summer to enjoy the fruits and feed the garden birds in winter.

Planting and care

Plant this collection in the sun or partial shade, in ordinary but well-prepared soil, enriched with leaf compost, that is rather moist but well-drained. Dig planting holes of 30-40 cm (12-16in) in all directions, thoroughly loosening the bottom and walls with a fork or pickaxe. Maintain a planting distance of 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) between each bush. Easy to grow and not very demanding, these shrubs only require mulching in summer in dry climates to maintain some moisture, at least during the first summers after planting. Water them abundantly in the first few years in the case of pronounced drought (15-20 litres of water each time), but keep waterings spaced out. You can prune the longest branches to help your shrubs branch out.
