Description
The Collection of snowberries with Colourful Berries brings together 3 deciduous bushes that brighten the garden with their decorative berries late into the season. Their fruiting offers a range of colours from brilliant white to purplish pink. These hardy plants, featuring tender green foliage and discreet summer flowering, are truly easy to cultivate. They adapt to all types of soil, whether in full sun or partial shade. Bring them into a small hedge or a shrubbery bed!
This collection consists of:
1 Symphoricarpos ‘Amethyst’: This dense and compact bush, reaching 1.5 metres in height, stands out for its intense purple berries that appear after a white bell-shaped summer flowering.
1 Symphoricarpos x doorenboosii 'White Hedge': This upright variety reaches about 1.2 metres in height. It produces bright, pearly white berries.
1 Symphoricarpos x chenaultii 'Hancock': With a more spreading habit, this snowberry spreads over 2.5 metres with a height of about 60 cm. It is adorned with small dark pink berries, and its foliage takes on a reddish hue in autumn.
These Symphoricarpos can be planted in spring or autumn. These bushes adapt to all exposures: they tolerate shade but will be more floriferous and fruit-bearing in partial shade or full sun. Any well-prepared garden soil will suit them; they even cope with dry soils riddled with roots found under large trees and at the foot of hedges. Plant the taller Symphorine ‘Amethyst’ in the background, followed by 'White Hedge' for a low hedge, and finish with Hancock in front of the others or at the edge, due to its spreading habit. Maintain a spacing of 70 cm between each plant for a lovely blanket cover. For a dense effect, count 3 plants per m².
To accompany the Collection of Snowberries with Colourful Berries, opt for modestly sized bushes that offer beautiful flowering, attractive autumn foliage, or decorative fruiting. Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea’ showcases dark purple foliage turning to scarlet red in autumn; plant it in the background to highlight the colourful fruiting of the snowberries. Viburnum opulus ‘Compactum’ with its bright red berries and yellow-orange autumn foliage, blends to add texture and colour to the scene. Cotoneaster horizontalis, creeping, with small red berries, whose foliage turns bronze in autumn, will complete the ensemble, planted in front of the other bushes. Count 4 plants of Berberis, 3 of Viburnum, and 5 of Cotoneaster to create a balanced composition rich in colours.

Planting and care
Plant these bushes in early spring or autumn. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. They will adapt to any well-prepared and loosened garden soil, preferably well-drained. Water regularly to aid recovery, and apply a mulch at the base of the young plants in early summer to maintain some moisture and conserve water. Once well-rooted, snowberries do not require watering in summer.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
