Description

Cytisus x praecox 'Allgold' is a floriferous early broom, forming a small, compact, well-ramified bush. From March onwards, it is covered with masses of golden yellow flowers.

This broom develops a ramified, dense, but light-looking habit. It reaches a height of 1.2m (4ft). Its flexible and woody stems bear single, alternate, narrow, silky, deciduous green leaves, 6 to 10mm (0.2 to 0.4 in) long. In March, masses of golden yellow papilionaceous flowers, about 2cm (1in) long, grow together in fragrant clusters. Fruits then develop into black pods. The fruit pods can cause staining to pathways, buildings, and cars.

Easy to grow, Cytisus x praecox 'Allgold' adapts well to any light and well-drained soil, preferably slightly acidic, in a sunny location. Not demanding, it will be satisfied with a severe pruning after flowering to avoid fruiting which quickly exhausts the plant. This also helps to maintain a compact habit that does not become bare at the base.

Plant with dwarf conifers, spindles, and perennial geraniums, in flower beds, rockeries, slopes, and wild gardens.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or autumn in any light and well-drained soil, preferably slightly acidic, in a sunny location. Limestone is tolerated. Choose its location carefully as it does not like to be moved. Not demanding, it will be satisfied with severe pruning after flowering to avoid fruiting, which quickly exhausts the plant. This also helps to maintain a compact habit that does not become bare at the base. If the plant is damaged during a severe winter, cut back any blackened stems to the base. The lifespan is quite short, around 5 years.
