Description

The Magnolia macrophylla subsp ashei, also known as Magnolia ashei, is a smaller form of the large-leaved Magnolia. Just as spectacular as the typical species with its oversized leaves and flowers, this version is more suitable for the size of our gardens. This large bush offers a lush apple green foliage with silver reverse, very large white flowers with dark red heart, pleasantly scented, large decorative fruits as well as beautiful golden colors in autumn. Magnolia Ashei also has the advantage of flowering from a young age. A collection plant for tropical and exotic ambiance enthusiasts!

The Magnolia ashei was discovered on cliffs in Florida, it is a rare form in cultivation. It differs from the typical species by its smaller size, less hairy leaf undersides and its ability to bloom at a young age, after 3 or 4 years of cultivation under good conditions. According to sources, its leaves and flowers are also slightly smaller, although not all agree on this point. It is a plant that prefers deep, humus-rich, well-drained soil that remains slightly moist. M. ashei is a large bush with a rounded habit, a bit bushy, reaching 8 to 10 m in height and 7 to 8 m in spread at maturity. Its growth is quite fast in rich and moist soil. Its magnificent foliage consists of oblong leaves, of large size, measuring between 40 and 60 cm (16 and 24 in) in length. They are light green on the top, whitish-gray on the reverse. Flowering takes place between May and July. It takes the form of beautiful and large cup-shaped flowers, measuring 20-25 cm (8-10 in) in diameter, at the end of the branches. They have a slightly parchment-like texture, slightly yellowing white. Their fragrance has notes of jasmine and citrus. The flowers are followed by decorative conical fruits, red to purple, revealing seeds of a bright orange. The deciduous foliage turns yellow and amber in autumn before falling.

Although exotic in appearance, the Magnolia macrophylla ashei is hardy in many regions and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) without damage. It is preferably planted in partial shade, or even in full sun in our less sunny regions. It will be superb as a specimen or in the background of a bed, in an exotic theme. To accompany it, consider giant Brazilian rhubarb, rodgersias, queen of the meadows, and other ornamental gingers.

Planting and care

Grow the Magnolia macrophylla subsp. ashei in partial shade preferably (in the sun in less sunny and moist regions) but not in total shade. Plant it sheltered from the wind that would damage its large leaves. It requires a fertile, humus-rich, deep, well-drained soil, with a neutral or slightly acidic tendency. The soil should never completely dry out, without being waterlogged.

In a lime-free soil: dig a very large planting hole of at least 70 cm (28 in) in all directions and add ericaceous compost and mulch mixed with your garden soil.

Mulch the Magnolia in the first year to prevent it from freezing during severe winter frosts. Water it well in cases of drought. Rainfall will be sufficient for watering, except in abnormally dry summers. From February to June, before vegetation emerges, remove dead or diseased wood as well as crossing branches.
