Peony received in a pot with already many stems that are growing day by day. Very healthy young plant. Now we just have to be patient to discover the flowers... next year or in a few years... depending on the whims of the lady: with peonies, you never know.

Description

Paeonia lactiflora Bowl of Beauty is a highly ornamental perennial that blooms abundantly from May to June. The large single flowers are of the Japanese type and composed of two rows of carmine pink. The wide centre of the flower is yellow and gradually becomes cream white. The flowers can measure up to 12 cm (5in) in diameter and are grouped on stems. You can cut them to make beautiful bouquets.

The foliage of this deciduous Paeonia is glabrous. The leaves can measure up to 10 cm (4in) long. This plant is very hardy. It is also very vigorous and robust, which allows it to live longer. Native to Asia, China, and Europe, the Bowl of Beauty peony reaches a height of 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) in adulthood.

This variety of Paeonia lactiflora thrives in border plantings, flowerbeds, and even on a lawn as a standalone specimen. Do not keep in a pot as its needs will not be met. You can combine it with other perennials that will bloom before or after the peony, such as phlox, chrysanthemums, and even shrubs like roses. The Bowl of Beauty peony is commonly found in cottage-style gardens. Herbaceous peonies remind us of the scent and beauty of our grandparents' gardens, where they were often present. For the Chinese, the peony is the queen of flowers, symbolizing feminine beauty and love.

Our bouquet tip: Cut your peonies at dawn when the buds start to colour.

Planting and care

Place the Bowl of Beauty Peony mainly in the sun. In southern regions you should provide partial shade, protecting it during the hottest hours of the day. Plant from September to May, except during freezing periods, in fertile and deep, humus-bearing soil that is moist but well-drained, to prevent the roots from rotting. Easy to grow, peonies require little maintenance. During planting, dig a large hole measuring 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) on each side and add potting soil, river sand, and peat. Place the collar at ground level. Do not overcrowd the plants to ensure proper air circulation. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season with regular watering. Peonies are known to be homebodies, so you shouldn't move them after planting. (If you do they have to be divided, otherwise they won't flower for several years). From February to April or October to November, cut the foliage to ground level, taking care with the young shoots. Provide a stake to support the floral stems, and remove faded flowers during the season. Protect peonies from viruses, nematodes, and thrips larvae. Armillaria (honey fungus) can cause rapid plant death, and stem rot destroys shoots and flower buds.
