Description

Paeonia lactiflora ‘Glory Hallelujah’ is a late Chinese peony that flowers in June, when the peony season is coming to an end. Its very large, very double flowers boast a rich colour, between cherry pink and rosy red, and are lightly fragrant. This herbaceous peony will look beautiful in flower beds, borders and cottage gardens. It is an excellent cut flower.

This plant, like all peonies, belongs to the Paeoniaceae family. It is descended from Paeonia lactiflora, an herbaceous perennial native to temperate Asia. Its above-ground growth is deciduous: its stems die back in autumn, while the fleshy crown remains alive underground and produces new shoots in spring.

'Glory Hallelujah’ was bred by Carl G. Klehm in Illinois and registered in 1970. It is the result of a cross-breeding between ‘Monsieur Jules Elie’, used as the female parent, and a numbered seedling 71D. The plant reaches 90 to 100cm in height, and the clump expands slowly. In spring, young shoots emerge from buds near the soil surface. The sturdy, thick stems carry dark green foliage, divided into large, fairly broad elliptical leaflets. The flower buds are large and round. Each stem often bears one main bud, accompanied by several lateral buds. The flowers reach 17 to 20cm in diameter, with a light and pleasant fragrance. They are double, in a rose form, composed of a row of wider outer petals and a centre overflowing with overlapping petals. The petals are thick, glossy, slightly recurved, in a mix of cherry pink, red pink and bright pink. When fully open, the edge of some petals takes on lighter, almost silvery highlights.
In China, the Chinese peony has been cultivated for centuries for its flowers and for its roots, used in local medicine.

This peony finds a place in a sunny border, planted in rich, moist but well-drained soil. It is a robust perennial but does not like competition. It can be paired with Geum ‘Mai Tai’, Penstemon digitalis ‘Husker Red’, Daylily ‘Gentle Shepherd’ and Aster cordifolius ‘Little Carlow’. Your border will be in flower from spring until the end of summer.

Planting and care

Place peony 'Glory Hallelujah' in full sun or in partial shade during the hottest hours of the day; this is even preferable in some very hot and sunny regions. Between September and April, but preferably in autumn, plant it in fertile, deep, moist but well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Add compost or manure in autumn and spring. Easy-going peonies require little care. When planting, dig a generous hole 50cm wide and use a mix of potting compost and garden soil. Place the collar 4-5cm below the soil surface. Space peonies 60-70cm apart, as they need room and dislike competition from other species. Keep the soil moist with regular watering. Peonies have a reputation for disliking disturbance. For this reason, avoid moving them after planting. Consider staking to support the flowering stems. Protect peonies from viruses, nematodes, and thrips larvae.
