Description

Aster cordifolius 'Little Carlow' is a perennial highly appreciated for its bright and melliferous lavender-blue autumn flowering. It stands out for its disease resistance. Its astonishing colour will revive tired flower beds after summer.

'Little Carlow' reaches a height of 90cm (35in) with a spread of 40m (16in). It has dark green foliage with elongated leaves, smooth margins, and pointed tips. It blooms from September to October in dense clusters of small lavender-blue daisies with yellow-brown centres. The stems are purplish green. Aster cordifolius 'Little Carlow' will give your flower beds a renewed vigour at the end of summer.

Highly resistant to diseases and frost (-20°C (-4°F)), this aster also tolerates all types of soil as long as it is not too wet in winter. To ensure good flowering, mulch your flower bed from June onwards to keep the soil cool at its base. It will need protection from strong winds that would flatten the flowering clumps, or alternatively provide support.

It is impossible to imagine our homes without aster flower beds or borders. Not demanding, they blend well with other plants in flower beds such as salvias or Crocosmia. Both cheerful and melancholic, these perennials accompany the return of autumn and the splendour of fall foliage. When combined with the fiery colours of Cotinus or euonymus, the result is astonishing. Asters also make beautiful bouquet flowers.

Planting and care

Plant Aster cordifolius 'Little Carlow' in autumn or spring in ordinary, rich, and well-worked soil. Keep the soil around its base moist by mulching from June onwards, and water during heatwaves. It prefers a sunny position but can tolerate partial shade, where it will have a slightly looser habit. Strong winds can flatten the clumps. Avoid this by planting your aster near a wall or surrounded by dense bushes. You can also use a four-legged support system, which involves creating a frame by connecting four stakes with string or thin boards, positioned 50cm (20in) above the ground. Once established, avoid moving your asters as they don't appreciate changes. In flower beds, leave at least 50cm (20in) spacing between the plants. Divide the clumps every three years to maintain their floriferous nature. Do not replant the divisions in the same spot and provide them with nutrient-rich soil.
