Description

The great Nasturtium or Tropaeolum majus is an annual climbing plant that reaches a height of 2.5m (8ft), with round leaves of about 4cm (2in) in light green colour.

The cultivar 'Baby Orange' has beautiful slender flowers, yellow with orange spots in the centre.

Its rapid growth and continuous flowering from May to the first frost make it an excellent choice as a climbing plant, as well as a ground cover for any type of terrain - it thrives in poor soils - for slopes, walls... You can also grow it in a pot where it will be an elegant trailing plant.

Originally from South America, it was introduced to Europe as a vegetable plant under the name "Peruvian cress"; today it is more often used as an aphid repellent (it attracts all the aphids from the neighbourhood, thus leaving the vegetable garden or neighbouring fruit trees) than in salads.

Green plants measuring 4 to 8cm in plug plants of 5 small plugs with a diameter of 2.8cm (1in) and a height of 4cm (2in). Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in the ground.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners : upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your nasturtiums in the ground or in a pot. If you plant them in the ground, wait until the last frost has passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your nasturtiums in a sunny location. They are very tolerant and thrive in poor soil. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they can reach 2m (7ft) in a single summer. Remember to provide support if you use them as climbers. You can easily take cuttings from the stems. Nasturtiums attract aphids, so monitor and treat their appearance.
