Beautiful variety, very bright, can be seen from far away in the garden! The flowers have endured several frosts without flinching, but they are so big that they suffer a lot during heavy rains. Bulbs are large and healthy, happy with my purchase!" Analysis: - "variété" is translated as "variety" - "fleur" is translated as "flower" - "eau" is translated as "water" - "cil" does not appear in the text, so no translation is required. The translated text is grammatically correct and maintains the same tone as the original text.

Description

Crocus 'Grand Jaune' is a Mammoth selection with large flowers. It is notable for its beautiful vibrant golden yellow corollas, which open like little suns from the end of winter. This great classic is easy to grow. It is perfect for enlivening lawns, a rockery, a border, or even ephemeral pots from the end of winter. The bulbs naturalise easily, faithfully bloom each year, and require no maintenance.

This crocus is a variety derived from Crocus vernus, the spring crocus, a perennial plant with a corm from the Iridaceae family. Just like many horticultural hybrid crocuses with spring flowering, this variety produces large-sized flowers, unlike many botanical species. The species itself is native to central and eastern Europe, and as such, is extremely hardy and well-suited to our climate. 'Grand Jaune' forms a clump of dark green linear leaves with a white median in late winter. In February-March, it produces large solitary flowers from a whitish spathe, about 10cm (4in) in height. In this variety, the 6 petals are a warm and perfectly uniform yellow, enhanced by a satin texture that plays with the light. The flowers close at night and in bad weather. They open widely in the sun, revealing stamens of the same golden yellow.

Crocuses are undisputed stars of the garden, as they are the first heralds of spring. 'Grand Jaune' is a radiant and cheerful "mammoth" variety from the end of winter that can emerge here and there or in large carpets on a rockery, at the edge of a lawn, or an alley. It also thrives in pots or planters, to brighten up balconies and patios. Crocuses prefer to stay in place where they easily naturalise and grow larger year after year. Do not remove the leaves until they have yellowed and withered. The leaves help the bulbs replenish their reserves for future flowering.

You can also choose crocuses with autumn flowering, such as Sternbergia lutea, saffron, or colchicums, which are just as charming and easy to grow. The warm yellow of 'Grand Jaune' will create a sublime duo with our collection of blue muscari and hyacinths.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs from September to December, in light and well-drained soil, at a depth of 5cm (2in) and with a spacing of 5cm (2in), or in groups of three every 15 or 20cm (6 or 8in). After flowering and when the leaves have withered, you can remove the bulbs and store them in a sheltered, dry and airy place until the next planting. However, it is best to leave them in place, unless your soil is too wet or waterlogged in summer. The bulbs like to spend their resting period (late spring, summer, after the foliage has dried) in rather dry soil. They will form increasingly floriferous clumps.
