Colchicum

Few take a few minutes in summer to plant these magnificent autumn-flowering bulbs. Think about it! Alongside autumn crocuses, notably C.sativus (saffron crocus), the genus Colchicum, the "lord of autumn", adorns the garden at a time when it is otherwise a little dull. The earliest, like the colchicum 'The Giant' or C. cilicicum, bloom as early as September. Most bloom in October, like the colchicum with water lily leaves or the white-flowered colchicum (C. speciosum album).
