Description

Allium 'Early Emperor' is an early variety whose mauve-pink flowering with violet reflections begins 2 to 3 weeks before most other ornamental garlics, making it the perfect companion to late tulips.

The 'Early Emperor' garlic forms beautiful globular inflorescences with a diameter of 8 to 10cm (3 to 4in). The flowers are mauve-pink with violet reflections. At flowering, it will reach approximately 80cm (32in) in height. The flowers have a good vase life.

Like many garlics, Allium 'Early Emperor' likes sunny exposures. It prefers moist but well-drained soils. It is sensitive to excess water in winter.

Due to its early flowering, plant it alongside late-flowering tulips.

Planting and care

Plant Allium 'Early Emperor' before the end of October so that it has time to establish itself. It dreads excessive moisture in winter. Give it a sunny spot in well-drained, even rocky, soil. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spaced 10cm (4in) apart. It is undemanding, but does prefer poor soil.
