Description

Allium vineale 'Hair' is a beautiful perennial ornamental garlic with a unique flowering. It bears hairy, tousled, apple green flowers with a purple heart that brings movement to gardens. It has a stunning effect in floral arrangements.

Also known as Hairy Vine Garlic, it is a melliferous bulbous plant, 80cm (32in) tall, with a smooth, slender stem. It has medium green deciduous, ribbon-like leaves, which are cylindrical like chives. In May, globular inflorescences 5cm (2in) in diameter grow at the ends of the stems, with tiny, rose-coloured flower buds supported by fine, apple green, cylindrical hairs with a purple heart. When cut, it emits a strong garlic smell.

Originally from temperate regions, Allium 'Hair' appreciates all moist but well-drained, gravelly, poor soils. It will be content with soil that is dry in summer. It prefers a sunny location. Once established, it naturalises well. It has a fast growth rate.

Allium 'Hair' is used in rock gardens, grouped in mass plantings, or in pots. Combine it with graceful perennials like perennial geraniums, heuchera, or ornamental grasses for a unique display.

Planting and care

Plant Allium 'Hair' in autumn in moist but well-drained soil in full sun, spaced 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) apart and at a depth of 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb. For a beautiful mass effect, group the bulbs in sets of 7. Remove faded flowers and allow it to naturalise. Fertilise during flowering with a special bulb fertiliser. To prevent white rot, soak the bulbs in a solution of diluted bleach at 10%. It is possible to grow in a pot with good, loose, and well-drained soil.
