Description
Iris germanica rhizomes have long fan-like leaves that can be evergreen. These European irises bloom for a few weeks in May/June with small clusters of bearded flowers that can reach 6 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. The flowers have intense blue sepals, very light blue petals and a yellow beard.
The plant is 50/60 cm (20/24in) high and very robust in all climates. It should be planted in full sun, in dry and well-drained soil.
Iris Night Edition should be shallowly planted, leaving the rhizome exposed at ground level. Add sand if the soil is wet, and place the rhizomes on small mounds.
Irises can be planted among perennials or in front of bushes. It is better to scatter them in groups of 3 or alone instead of creating uniform masses of irises. Irises are particularly well suited to very sunny borders.

Planting and care
Iris Night Edition should be planted shallowly, leaving the rhizome exposed at ground level. Add sand if the soil is wet and place the rhizomes on small mounds. Ensure good drainage so that the irises do not rot. During summer, water once or twice a month. Cut the flower stalks to 10 cm (4in) from the ground after flowering. Damaged leaves should only be removed in autumn. Do not give them too much nitrogen as it weakens the plant and increases the number of leaves at the expense of flowers. Iris can be susceptible to heterosporiosis, a disease identified by oval brown spots. Every 4 years in summer, divide the clumps by pulling up the entire plant and transplanting the most beautiful plants from the rhizome, usually those on the outer edge, to an area which has had no irises for a year.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
