Planted upon arrival, in good condition, the young plant is thriving, being in the sunlight and enjoying it. I am eagerly awaiting the flowers, perhaps not this year, but who knows!

Description

Iris germanica 'Alizes' is a Garden Iris of the Amoena type, a chromatic category defined by flowers with white petals and coloured sepals. In 'Alizes', the petals are pure crystalline white and the sepals are widely bordered with mauve blue on a greenish-white to bluish-white background. The heart of the flower is animated by yellow beards. This variety will also charm with its exceptional floribundity and the gentle fragrance of its flowers.

The 'Alizes' Iris is a rhizomatous perennial plant that develops from spring in elegantly upright clumps, with its foliage disappearing in winter. It belongs to the family of Iridaceae. It is one of the many cultivars obtained over centuries, whose controversial origin is discussed around the number of chromosomes of potential ancestors. It is worth noting that Garden Irises have European origins. They are plants that thrive in limestone soils and require ample sunlight, with their rhizomes needing to 'cook' in summer to be able to bloom. A minimum of 6 hours of sunlight per day is generally required.

'Alizes' iris will reach a height of 85cm (34in) when in bloom, making it a medium-sized variety. The clump will spread without a theoretical limit over time, with the central rhizomes becoming bare in favour of the outer rhizomes. The foliage consists of long and wide sword-shaped leaves, a somewhat glaucous green, traversed by parallel veins. In April, floral stems appear that will give well-proportioned and slightly undulate large flowers in May, which bloom from the top to the lower branches. This variety flowers in the middle of the iris season, with its floral stems well-branched, each capable of bearing up to 5 open flowers at the same time. The colour of this plant is, as always with Garden Irises, enhanced by the thick and iridescent texture of the floral parts. The fragrance of the flowers is described as sweetly floral.

Obtained by Cayeux, 1987

To accompany irises, plants should be chosen to associate with them based on their needs (exposure, soil...), their "respectful" vegetation towards irises (low plants or light foliage), and their decorative complementarity (appearance, flowering time). For example, Gauras will cast little shade on irises and keep the faded iris bed attractive throughout the summer. California Poppies and Love-in-a-Mist will tolerate a dry soil in summer, just like irises. Perennial geraniums, salvias, and Libertia also go well with irises. Slopes and terraced edges will be stabilized by a dense planting of old diploid varieties that can remain in place and require little care. If the goal is more decorative and access for care is possible, one can choose more modern varieties, for example intermediates that will be less prone than tall ones to being literally knocked down by wind and rain.

The vegetable garden can be adorned with a few clumps or borders of irises, as it is also the classic place dedicated to cut flowers.

Planting and care

Do you have a sunny, wind-sheltered, warm, and rather dry location in the summer?
This is the ideal location for planting tall bearded irises! In the shade, they grow but do not bloom. They are cultivated in all regions. Hardy, they do not need winter protection. Well-drained soil is perfect, even if it is rather dry. German iris requires a limestone soil: amend your soil with lime if it tends to be acidic. Excessively wet soil promotes rhizome rot. Plant from July to September. This allows the rhizomes enough time to grow sufficiently before being dug up, and to develop new roots before winter. They should be planted as soon as they are purchased for better results. Plan to divide the irises every 4 years or so to give them fresh soil. They have vigorous growth and require space to develop and flower well. They are planted with spacing appropriate to the size and vigour of the variety: about 34-50cm (13-20in) for tall ones (5 to 10 plants per square metre). In a monochrome planting, rhizomes are planted in a staggered pattern. To create a mix of colours, it is recommended for the overall aesthetic of the iris bed to plant them in groups of several plants of the same variety. Always consider the direction of rhizome growth by arranging them in a star shape, with buds and leaves facing outward, and spacing them well from other varieties to give them room to grow.

Planting:

Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough. Create a wide conical mound of soil in the hole, on which the rhizome and spread-out roots are placed. Cover the roots. It is important for the rhizome to be left just above the surface of the soil. It should not be planted in a basin (risk of rot), so anticipate that the soil will settle and the iris will sink. In clay or moist soil, the rhizome will even be raised on a slight mound of a few centimeters. To make the soil adhere to the roots, lightly tamp the soil and water it abundantly at the time of planting. Water 2-3 times if necessary until it establishes.

Maintenance:

Keep the soil weed-free by shallow hoeing, taking care not to injure the rhizomes or roots. Weeds shade the irises, retain moisture (rot), and attract slugs. Similarly, remove dry leaves. If they are diseased (reddish-bordered spots of heterosporiosis), burn them. Remove faded flowers.
