Description

The Euphorbia or Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae is a perennial that adapts to the dry shade of trees and is, therefore, suitable for woodland areas. Its flowering period from April to May is characterized by vibrant and striking shades of chartreuse green, accentuated by fused bracts forming a complete disc that illuminates corners of the garden. The dark green leaves are semi-evergreen.

There are numerous and diverse Euphorbias in terms of their characteristics. Their common feature for most is their always decorative foliage and flowering. Their upright stems start from the base and form a bushy clump, more spreading but smaller than the Wood Euphorbia: 50 cm (20in). They bear numerous obovate leaves, 3 to 8 cm (1 to 3in) long, dark green and glossy, up to the tops that are topped with inflorescences. These inflorescences are grouped in cymes, 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) tall, and covered with numerous small cyathia (this term is mainly used for Euphorbias). Take a close look at Euphorbias; their delicate collared bracts, silhouette, long-lasting foliage, and brightly coloured flowers make them essential in flowerbeds.

The only downside is that these plants have significant characteristics. Their sap consists of an irritating and toxic latex. Always remember to handle them with gloves, keep an eye on children playing nearby, and warn them.

The Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae is best placed in woodlands alongside Lamiums, Epimediums, Periwinkles, and spring bulbs. It tolerates summer drought and adapts to different soil types, although it prefers humus-bearing and moist soils. Take advantage of its brightness and pair it with the light blue of Brunneras.
