Description

The Zephyr Rose is a climbing rose that blooms repeatedly, producing numerous clusters of small double, velvety dark red flowers. These slightly fragrant flowers bloom continuously from May until the first frost, on a healthy and shiny foliage that is highly resistant to diseases. This easy-to-grow rose, with moderate growth, can be planted in the garden or in a pot on the terrace or balcony.

The Zephyr Tan 07210 rose is a repeat-flowering climbing rose obtained by Tantau. It is vigorous, with flexible stems and thorny branches, reaching a height of 2.5m to 3m and a spread of 2m to 2.5m. Its spotless foliage perfectly enhances the beautiful clusters of 4cm, small, intense, velvety dark red flowers. It blooms abundantly and almost continuously, from May to October, as long as it does not lack water. The flowers are double, with slightly loose petals. Their fragrance is fresh and rather light.

The Zephyr rose is suitable for beginners and can be planted to cover a wall, fence, pillar, or arch, in the ground or in a pot, where it elegantly decorates a balcony. It requires very little maintenance, except for regular watering in summer during hot and dry periods. Pair it with other roses, or combine with easy-to-grow large-flowered clematis like 'Broughton Star' for a harmony of pink and red. It complements the background of a perennial bed, behind panicle phlox, delphiniums, tall sages, for a beautiful mix of blue and red, along with foxgloves, catnips, and tall baby's breath. It can also be paired with foliage climbers like Virginia creeper.

Planting and care

Plant this climbing rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-tilled and well-drained soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, more heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is best to add compost or well-rotted manure to the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose also doslikes waterlogged soils in winter. Plant it in a sunny location, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific fertiliser application will be beneficial at the start of vegetation, and regularly throughout flowering. To encourage reblooming, regularly remove faded flowers. In late winter, prune the stems by about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 eyes from the base of the stem). Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.
